Music around the World: Koffi Olomide

Koffi Olomide is hands down one of the most popular African musicians in the world today. Raised in Kinshasha, he would record his debut solo album (Ngounda) in 1983, and after realizing that in those days the only way to record or perform regularly in Kinshasha was to team up with other artists, he formed the legendary Quarter Latin; a multi-talented collection of singers and dancers with whom he would go on to give unique, lively performances. Today he and his group are favorites for many on the African, Caribbean and French music scenes.

Koffi Olomide is known for his funny music videos, outlandish costumes, comical yet precise dance choreography, great dancers and edgy lyrics. I love watching him and his group perform because they look like they are having a genuinely great time, with no cares in the world. And even though in recent years he has been the subject of some negative drama, we can still appreciate his good music and entertaining performances.
